Our Intro to Wheel Throwing Class addresses the basic for throwing on the wheel.

The first lesson starts with the basic techniques required for kneading, centering, hollowing, pinching and lifting. Different types of clay and properties  will be explained, as well as your first look at the equipment and tools.  Our goal upon completion of the first class is to create two small upright cylinder shaped pots, or bowls. The pots will then be allowed to set up or dry slightly in preparation for your next class.  The second lesson will address trimming the pot and turning a foot ring or foot for your pot, along with an explanation of the tools you will be using. Upon completion of your second class, the pots will be allowed to dry completely. Once the pots are dry, they will get there first kiln firing. Your third lesson will address glazing techniques. Pots may be glazed by either utilizing a brush on glaze or a dipping process.  Again once your glazed pots are dry they will receive a second firing.  Upon completion you may pick up your work.

Our Intro to Wheel Throwing Class includes 3 visits to the studio and are individual one on one classes with the instructor. Clay, Glaze and the costs of two kiln firings are included in the cost of the class.  Classes are scheduled on an individual basis, to fit your schedule.

At Scala Pottery, I enjoy the teaching, and introducing people to the wheel. Lessons are just a way of sharing what I’ve learned with others.
